In recent years, Turkey has experienced a number of devastating earthquakes, causing widespread property damage, injury, and loss of lives. On February 6th at 4:17 am terrible earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 on the Richter scale hit the southeast part of Turkey, toppling high raise buildings and leaving a trail of disaster in Gaziantep. About 4 hours later a second shockwaves with a magnitude of 7.5 hit Kahramanmaras province.
The earthquake also hit northern Syria sending off tremors as far as Egypt, Lebanon, and Northern Cyprus. In Turkey mostly struck Gaziantep, Hatay and the close proximity. The S waves were also felt in other Turkish cities, including the capital city of Ankara, causing extensive property damage, with many buildings collapsing and roads being blocked.
A Tragedy That Shakes a Nation
The destruction of properties has left many families homeless, thousands of people dead, and survivors in desperate need of basic necessities. The Turkish government has declared a mourning period for the victims and has launched a massive relief operation to provide humanitarian aid to those affected by the natural disaster.
